UV LED vs. Conventional Drying on 6 Colors High Speed Flexo Printing Machine: A Technical Comparison
Join Date: 2026-04-28

Drying technology is a critical component of any 6 Colors High Speed Flexo Printing Machine, affecting speed, energy use, and substrate options. Two dominant methods are conventional hot air (plus IR) and UV LED curing. Hot air dryers evaporate solvents or water from inks, leaving a solid film. They are simple and compatible with a wide range of water-based and solvent-based inks. However, they require significant energy to heat large volumes of air, and the high temperature can distort heat-sensitive films like PE. Additionally, hot air dryers have slower response times, and the drying length needed increases with press speed. UV LED curing, on the other hand, instantly polymerizes specially formulated inks using high-intensity light at 365-395 nm. The 6 Colors High Speed Flexo Printing Machine with UV LED has several advantages: near-instant curing allows printing on non-absorbent substrates without setoff; the process is cool, so no thermal distortion; LED lamps last 20,000+ hours with low energy consumption (about 30% of a hot air system for the same output). Furthermore, UV LED enables printing on thin unsupported films and even on heat-sensitive shrink sleeves. The downsides include higher ink costs (UV inks are more expensive) and the need for special plate materials that resist UV-generated ozone. Also, UV LED curing requires the 6 Colors High Speed Flexo Printing Machine to have a more complex interstation layout to fit multiple lamps. In practice, many modern 6 Colors High Speed Flexo Printing Machines offer hybrid configurations: UV LED for high-speed, high-quality jobs on films, and hot air for water-based inks on paper and board. Environmental considerations favor UV LED because it emits no VOCs and uses less electricity. For converters printing primarily on polyethylene and polypropylene, UV LED is often the best choice despite higher consumable costs. For paper sacks or corrugated, hot air remains economical. The decision also depends on the availability of UV-curable inks in spot colors and white. When evaluating a 6 Colors High Speed Flexo Printing Machine, ask about the drying energy consumption per square meter. Also consider the maintenance: hot air dryers need filter cleaning and blower servicing; UV lamps need periodic cleaning of the quartz window. Both systems have their place. The trend, however, is toward UV LED, driven by sustainability and the demand for printing on challenging films. A flexible 6 Colors High Speed Flexo Printing Machine that can accept both drying modules offers the greatest versatility. As LED technology advances and ink prices drop, expect UV LED to become the default choice for new 6 Colors High Speed Flexo Printing Machines within five years.
