narrow web flexo

Narrow web flexo refers to flexographic printing presses with a maximum web width typically between 200 mm and 600 mm. These machines are purpose-built for the label, tag, and small-format packaging market, offering exceptional flexibility, fast job changeovers, and high-quality output for short to medium runs.

The narrow web segment is dominated by inline presses that integrate printing with die-cutting, laminating, and rewinding. Many narrow web flexo presses are equipped with sleeve technology for plates and anilox rollers, allowing changes in under 5 minutes. This enables converters to handle numerous small orders profitably.

Common substrates include self-adhesive label stock (paper, PET, PP), shrink sleeves, beverage wraps, flexible packaging pouches, and thermal transfer ribbons. The press can print with water-based, UV, or solvent inks, with UV being the most popular due to its instant cure and high gloss.

Key specifications: printing width up to 600 mm, speed up to 300 m/min, repeat length from 150 mm to 750 mm, and number of colors typically 4 to 10. Anilox roller line screens vary from 300 to 1200 lpi depending on the required ink density and resolution. High-resolution plates (50-60 micron dots) achieve fine text and halftones.

Changeover efficiency is a major selling point. Automated systems for plate mounting, ink viscosity control, and register setting reduce setup waste from typical 50-100 meters to as low as 10-20 meters. Many presses feature job recipe storage that recalls all parameters for repeat orders, ensuring consistency.

Maintenance for narrow web flexo focuses on anilox cleaning (ultrasonic or chemical), doctor blade replacement (every 1-2 shifts depending on usage), and impression roller condition. Because of the compact design, access to components is generally good, but regular cleaning of printing decks is essential to prevent ink build-up and hickeys.

Market trends: Narrow web flexo is facing competition from digital label presses, but hybrid models (flexo + digital) are emerging. These combine the speed and cost-efficiency of flexo for long runs with the variable data capability of digital for short-run personalization. Narrow web flexo remains the dominant technology for medium-volume label production, especially when metallic effects, screen printing, or cold foil are required.
