inline flexo press
An inline flexo press is a printing system that combines flexographic printing with downstream converting processes such as die-cutting, lamination, slitting, sheeting, and stacking within a single continuous production line. This integration eliminates the need for separate offline finishing operations, reducing labor, waste, and lead times.
Inline presses are most common in narrow-web label printing (up to 500 mm) and mid-web flexible packaging. They typically feature 4 to 10 color decks, followed by one or more converting modules. The entire line is synchronized via a common control system that maintains register and tension across printing and finishing units.

The primary benefit is efficiency: a label printed, die-cut, and rewound in one pass significantly reduces handling and setup time. This is particularly advantageous for short to medium runs where setup costs dominate. Additionally, inline systems allow for variable data printing (e.g., barcodes, batch numbers) using digital inkjet modules integrated after flexo decks.
Key converting modules include rotary die-cutting units for label shapes, lamination stations for applying adhesive or protective films, slitting knives for multiple lanes, and sheeters for cut-sheet products. Some inline presses also include cold foil stamping and screen printing units for specialty effects.
Substrate versatility: Inline flexo presses can handle papers, films, foils, and even nonwovens. However, the web path is longer than in stand-alone presses, requiring careful tension management to avoid stretching or wrinkling, especially for thin films.
Maintenance of an inline press is more complex due to the multiple modules. Regular checks are needed on each converting unit's knives, dies, and lamination rollers. Lubrication schedules must cover not only printing decks but also gearboxes and bearings of finishing stations. Spare parts inventory should include common wear items for all modules.
Choosing an inline flexo press: Consider the required finishing operations, maximum line speed (often limited by converting speeds rather than printing), and floor space. Inline systems are ideal for converters who produce finished products ready for retail, such as label rolls, pouches, or folded cartons, with minimal manual intervention and quick turnaround times.
