Substrate Adaptability and Tension Stability Control for Various Flexo Label Materials

This technical paper analyzes tension fluctuation problems of paper, PP, PE and synthetic paper label substrates in high-speed flexo production, builds segmented tension control model, and solves substrate stretching and register deviation defects for different label materials.

Various label substrates have completely different tensile properties, which bring differentiated tension control difficulties in continuous narrow-web flexo printing. Paper labels have high rigidity but easy moisture deformation; plastic film labels have strong ductility and easy stretching; synthetic paper labels have balanced toughness but sensitive to temperature change. Unified tension parameter cannot adapt to all label materials, resulting in batch registration errors and substrate wrinkling.

Transverse and longitudinal tension coupling deviation is the main hidden quality problem in high-speed label printing. Narrow web substrates have small contact area with guide rollers, so tiny tension fluctuation will be amplified rapidly along web running direction. Long-term unstable tension causes cumulative longitudinal register error and transverse web drift, greatly reducing finished label yield.

Segmented tension partition control scheme suitable for flexo label presses. The whole press is divided into unwinding tension zone, printing unit tension zone and rewinding tension zone with independent tension parameters. Unwinding zone adopts low constant tension to avoid raw material stretching; printing zone uses micro floating tension to guarantee stable multi-color overprint; rewinding zone increases tension moderately to ensure neat finished roll winding without loose rolls.

Temperature and humidity compensation for paper label flexo printing. Workshop humidity fluctuation changes paper label water content, further altering substrate tensile elongation. When ambient humidity rises by 10%, paper label tension needs to be reduced by 8% to prevent web wrinkling. Constant temperature and humidity workshop environment plus real-time tension compensation can eliminate humidity-related paper label defects completely.

Anti-stretching process for ultra-thin PE film labels. Ultra-thin PE substrates are extremely prone to permanent stretching under conventional traction tension. Adopting gap-type traction roller structure instead of full-surface contact rollers reduces substrate contact friction, and servo tension closed-loop system realizes millisecond-level tension correction to control film elongation rate within 0.5%.

Operators can call matched tension data with one click during order switching, avoiding repeated manual tension debugging, cutting order change time by more than 60% and reducing debugging waste materials effectively.
