Sheet-fed vs Web-fed Flexo Process Performance Comparison for Folding Carton Production

This technical paper compares performance differences between web-fed roll flexo and sheet-fed sheet flexo for folding carton production, analyzes their respective advantages and defects, and provides process selection suggestions based on carton order batch and quality requirements.

Flexo folding carton production adopts two mainstream press types: web-fed continuous roll flexo press and sheet-fed single sheet flexo press. The two equipment structures lead to huge differences in printing registration accuracy, production speed, material waste rate and post-press connection efficiency, suitable for different carton order batches and quality grades.

Web-fed flexo folding carton printing adopts continuous roll cardboard feeding mode with uninterrupted production workflow. It supports high-speed running speed up to 300m/min and connects inline slitting, die-cutting and creasing units directly, realizing full one-stop carton production from raw roll material to finished folded cartons.

Advantages and limitations of web-fed flexo for folding cartons. Web-fed equipment has extremely low feeding waste and high production efficiency, perfectly fitting large-batch standardized folding carton orders. However, roll cardboard has subtle web tension fluctuation, resulting in slightly lower registration accuracy compared with sheet-fed presses, not suitable for ultra-high-end fine pattern carton products.

Advantages and limitations of sheet-fed flexo for folding cartons. Sheet-fed presses transport single cardboard sheets without web tension deviation, achieving ultra-high register accuracy up to 0.03mm, ideal for high-end luxury folding cartons with delicate patterns and small texts. But sheet-by-sheet feeding limits running speed, generates more front-end sheet positioning waste, and cannot match inline continuous post-press processing units.

Ink drying system difference between two carton flexo processes. Web-fed flexo matches high-power hot air drying tunnel adapting continuous high-speed production. Sheet-fed flexo adopts independent single-station drying module with more accurate temperature control, avoiding cardboard thermal deformation caused by long-time hot air baking.
