Flexo Press Cost: Detailed Breakdown of Capital, Installation, and Commissioning Expenses

The purchase price of a flexo press is only part of the initial investment. Many hidden costs can add 20-30% to the total. This article provides a comprehensive breakdown of all upfront costs to help buyers budget accurately.

Machine base price: As discussed, this varies by type and specifications. Ensure the quote includes all standard items (basic motors, control, unwind/rewind). Exclusions: anilox rollers, plates, and optional features. Also, check if the price includes the printing decks' basic cylinders or if they are extra.

Shipping and freight: The press is heavy and requires specialized transport (flatbed trucks, shipping containers). International shipping includes ocean freight, insurance, and import duties. The cost depends on the supplier's location and your location. Ask for Incoterms; CIF (cost, insurance, freight) means the supplier covers shipping up to your port; DDP (delivered duty paid) covers all duties. The buyer should understand the customs procedures and any import tariffs.

Installation and commissioning: This includes unloading, positioning the machine on the factory floor, leveling, and connecting utilities (electrical, compressed air, exhaust). The supplier may charge for on-site supervision. The buyer must prepare the site with adequate foundation (concrete base), sufficient power (voltage, amperage), and proper ventilation. Costs for a crane or forklift to move the press into position are additional.

Site preparation: The floor must be flat and strong enough to support the press's weight (up to 50 tons). Reinforced concrete with a load-bearing capacity of >5 tons/m² is typical. Electrical work includes installing a dedicated distribution panel and wiring. Compressed air piping with filters and dryers is needed. Exhaust ducting for dryers must be designed. These costs can be significant, especially for a new facility.

Training: The supplier may include basic training in the price, but advanced or extended training may cost extra. Also, the time for operator training during commissioning is often limited; additional days may be charged. Plan for operator availability during training.

Initial consumables: The first set of anilox rollers, plates, and doctor blades are often not included. The buyer must purchase these separately. The cost of these initial supplies can be $10k-$50k depending on the number of colors and complexity.

Warranty and service contract: The standard warranty is usually included, but an extended warranty or a service contract may be an additional cost. Some buyers opt for a preventive maintenance agreement for the first year.

Contingency: Always budget 10-15% for unexpected expenses, such as currency fluctuations, price increases, or unforeseen site issues. By accounting for all these costs, buyers can avoid budget overruns and ensure the press is installed and operational without financial stress.
